  • 1,500 Bulbs and Ex-Elephant Ears

This year's climate change and supply chain issues worked out to extra bloom time for the Triangle Gardens workers. They removed the pink and white vincas and white astilbe on a brisk Saturday November 6 and hoped some provisionals could come for a weekend workdate. Sunday, Susan Yu's husband Matt gave a hand with some of the elephant ears. Monday fortunately was a warm sunny morning for the group to plant 1,500 tulip bulbs and dig out the remaining large elephant ears and cannas (See photos below and—coming soon—full size photos on the Civic Beautification page.) Dylan and Christian from Montclair BID gave them a welcomed helping hand with the unwieldy elephant ears and bed turning. Thanks so much to Lauren Zodel, Maggie Rothmann, Sheila Curry Oakes, Susan Benner, Wendy Stahl, Kathy Sorkin, and Maureen Sprong who joined Jamie, Betty and Susan Yu. These hard workers also were surprised by fresh, hot baguettes by the grateful French Dad bakery! A delicious finish!

  • Decorate the Crane House in Historic Fashion!

This year, we are offering the workshop as a hybrid event. If you are comfortable being inside the house (with masks) and working with other members, please come. If you are staying socially distant, feel free to design a centerpiece at home and drop it off outside on December 1. We will have greens, artificial fruit, ribbons, and other materials available. • Change in Program Dates

Wall Street Journal writer Lindsey Taylor has been rescheduled from November to January 24. In her place, we are happy to welcome Steven Kristoph on November 15 at 1 pm as our scheduled speaker.. Steven received his Bachelor and Master’s degrees in horticulture from Rutgers University where he has taught as an adjunct professor of horticulture and Landscape Architecture for over 40 years. He owns and operates the Steven Kristoph Nursery in Millstone Township of Monmouth County NJ where he grows many types of ornamental trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials. Steve is passionate about plants and likes to share this with others. Plant walks with him are always an adventure. Taking time to smell all the roses is important to him and you can bet if there's indumentum on a rhododendron leaf close by Steven will take note. For his presentation Steven will regale us with a talk entitled Garden Getaways. Many gardens and arboretums can offer educational programs and conduct horticultural research which may include the introduction of new and exciting plants and hybrids. Over his lifetime Steve has visited many of these Gardens and he will provide images and information about each. His focus will be on Garden Getaways in the Northeast. And after being cooped up for so long we look forward hearing about these Great Garden Escapes.
